The Best Beaches in Tenerife
First-time visitors to the Canary Island of Tenerife will be captivated by the amazing black volcanic sands that make up most of the beaches on this enchanting island. Perennially popular with British and European visitors, Tenerife’s beaches have more to offer than black sand, as there are a variety of beaches, some with imported white Saharan sand, others classic golden beaches, and some that are a paradise for surfers.
Tenerife’s main resorts in the south include Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos, where sun-worshippers will be delighted to find miles of shimmering white and golden sandy beaches as well as all the amenities of a top-notch holiday resort. Along the coast is a renowned windsurfing spot at the gorgeous El Médano beach. Head to the quieter Costa Adeje for signature black sands at the beautiful El Duque beach with a spectacular backdrop of Mount Teide in the distance.
Off the beaten track in the north of Tenerife is the beautiful town of Puerto de la Cruz, an established resort with a more traditional Spanish feel. It boasts some of the island’s most beautiful beaches, such as Playa Jardin, which includes a great water park for children, and El Bollullo, which is hidden away in a secluded cove down the coast and offers dramatic views of the Atlantic. Man-made in the 1970s to adjoin the pretty village of San Andrés is the tranquil Playa de Las Teresitas which offers golden sands fringed by swaying palms. Like much of Tenerife, this is an excellent windsurfing and sailing spot.
